Nestled in the vibrant heart of Wellington, Upoko A Urunga Kohanga Reo stands as a beacon of Māori culture and education, welcoming tamariki (children) from ages 0-5 years into our warm and nurturing whānau (family). Established with the spirit of community at its core, we pride ourselves on providing an environment that fosters the growth and development of each unique taputapu (child), immersing them in te reo Māori and the rich traditions of our indigenous heritage. As you step into our kohanga reo (nest), you'll be greeted by the melodious sound of Māori waiata (songs) echoing through our corridors, the laughter of tamariki playing, and the gentle guidance of our experienced kaiako (teachers). Our licensed facilities cater to up to 42 children, with special care given to those under two years old, ensuring that each stage of their development is nurtured with love and dedication. At Upoko A Urunga Kohanga Reo, we believe in the power of awhi (support) and manaaki (care), guiding our tamariki through their early learning journey using a holistic approach that focuses on their cognitive, physical, social, and emotional growth. Our curriculum is designed to provide 20 hours of free education for children over three years old, ensuring that they receive the highest quality care and education possible. We are more than just a kindergarten; we are a community-based te kohanga reo that values the unique tapestry of our city's culture and diversity. Our commitment to total immersion in Māori language and values allows our tamariki to grow into confident, bilingual individuals who carry with them the richness of our indigenous heritage. So, come and join us at Upoko A Urunga Kohanga Reo, where every day is filled with laughter, learning, and the joy of discovery. Here, your child will not only learn important life skills but also develop a deep appreciation for the beauty and richness of our Māori culture, making them proud ambassadors of our heritage in the years to come. We look forward to welcoming you into our whānau!

Bad
“The woman in the office was unhelpful, rude and patronising. I asked if there I could have help loading the bags in the car and she said That was fine. When she came out to load them she started by picking up a bag of offcuts - which I had not purchased. When I pointed out I’d purchased the pine and Oregon, she told me to load the bags of pine and she’d do the Oregon. When I said I couldn’t because I have a bad back, she said she did too. She loading the 4 bags begrudgingly.”
