The thyroid gland is a little gland at the front of the neck that resembles a butterfly. It has two lobes that are joined by an isthmus, which is a thin band of thyroid tissue. The thyroid gland is structurally divided into tiny follicles that house the thyroid hormones. Iodine is essential for the creation of thyroid hormones. It's interesting to note that we cannot manufacture this substance, so we must rely on our diet to provide us with all the iodine we need for healthy thyroid function.
