Antipodes Design was originally formed by Phillip Tytler in 2009 and relaunched as Antipodes Architects in 2022. We are based in Invercargill, Southland and know this local environment well. We are passionate about Architecture and our aim is to provide contemporary buildings which are tailor made for our clients and which cohabitate with the environment to be inspiring, energy efficient and practical. We believe in creating a sustainable future by design. We believe internal space should be stimulating character full and inspirational. Our Interior environments have a strong connection to our beautiful Environment. Our principles are based on functionality and comfort and our aim is to create healthy, light and environmentally responsive spaces that are rich in texture and adaptable to your lifestyle needs. Creating strong connections to external spaces is of key importance, especially in New Zealand where strong internal to external flow is part of our way of life. Passive Design and Eco Architecture -Passive Design is building design that makes use of sunlight and works with the local climate and environment to keep you homes internal environment as comfortable as possible with minimal electrical or other energy input. -Growing up in Southland we are very aware of how harsh or environment can be. -We use building orientation, glazing location, insulation, roof overhang and building form to help moderate the inside temperature. -We also look at using thermal mass in the building to help regulate the temperature. This absorbs heat during the day or during warm weather and releases it at night or during cold weather. -Eaves and building orientation are used to let light in During Winter when the sun is low but to exclude it out in summer. -We create linked indoor outdoor areas which are sheltered and sunny. -We have 3D software to analyse solar gain at different times of the year. -Eco Architecture makes every effort to minimize the carbon footprint of your building over the buildings life cycle.
